Diagnosis: If frame rates drop from 144 FPS down to 40 FPS with micro-stuttering every 3 seconds, a background capture buffer or WDDM GPU scheduling conflict is responsible.

Step-by-step gaming optimization

  1. Step 1 — Disable Xbox Game Bar Background Captures

    Windows updates frequently re-enable 60 FPS background screen recording. Open Settings → Gaming → Captures. Toggle Record what happened to OFF.

  2. Step 2 — Toggle Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS)

    Go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default graphics settings. If Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is ON, toggle it OFF (or vice versa if running RTX 40/50 series) and reboot your PC. Recent updates introduced WDDM 3.2 memory thrashing on older drivers.

  3. Step 3 — Re-apply High Performance GPU Power Profile

    In Nvidia Control Panel or AMD Adrenalin software, ensure Power Management is set to "Prefer maximum performance" rather than "Optimal power", which causes core clock dips during map loading.

  4. Step 4 — Clean Shader Cache

    Press Win + S, search for Disk Cleanup, select your C: drive, check DirectX Shader Cache, and click OK. This clears stale pre-compiled shaders compiled on the previous Windows build.
